SVOX pico is the best open source TTS engine available for Linux. I am using the same TTS engine for my free Pediaphon Wikipedia TTS service. It supports high quality speech generation in five languages (en, de, fr, it, es). To get much better speech quality out of your Raspberry Pi I would recommend the open source Android SVOX pico TTS engine.
